4th-5th Grade Expeditions
4th Grade
WHAT MOVES PEOPLE?
What moves people? What are the effects of movement? Our case studies will develop background knowledge about how movement shaped the American West. After an initial map study, we will explore Idaho’s geology and how it shaped our state’s geography. This will lead into the settlement patterns and traditional culture of the Native American people in the land that would become Idaho. In November, we will begin a study of westward expansion with the Louisiana Purchase and the Corps of Discovery, and then onto the Oregon Trail. We will look at impact of the United States spreading west on both emigrants and Native cultures.
In February, our focus will turn toward life science. We will study Southern Idaho’s sagebrush ecosystem through food webs, plant structures, photosynthesis, adaptations, native plants and animals, threats to native species and how those are being addressed. There will be field work to plant native species, and to eradicate invasive species, as well as community education.
