Building Homes, Creating Cities

Early Childhood Expedition 2011-2012

Throughout this year-long expedition, students explore the world around them through the lenses of building homes and city planning. They begin by learning:

  • How and why were different types of homes, particularly log cabins, built in different places and times in history?
  • Exploring “life in a log cabin,” how was life in the past different than their lives today?

Students study mapping, the needs and wants of families and city planning. Their skills are put to the test as they plan, design and create a model city, ultimately understanding how people work together to make their cities function. As students learn about and work with Habitat for Humanity throughout this expedition, they come to understand the impact that each person can have in the world around them.
